 Hobart Showground Sunday market

NEW THINGS TO COME.. UPDATED 2023

The Hobart Showground has commenced a redevelopment of the current showground. The Sunday Market has closed during this redevelopment period. We regret the inconvenience to our patrons and stall holders but are excited at the prospect of a brand-new facility coming online in about 3 years.

The showground redevelopment project was commenced 10 years ago and we are now about to commence the third and final stage. We have tried hard to find an alternative venue but unfortunately current rents are more than double what they were 2 years ago meaning we would have to increase market rents to around $100 plus per site just to cover costs. We don’t believe our stall holders could afford that much rent.  We would also need to seek planning approval to operate a market at a new venue which would  be difficult given the need for car parking, vehicle access and disability facilities.

We have enjoyed supporting and subsidising the Sunday Market stall holders for nearly 30 years now and we hope those whom we consider friends are able to find alternative markets to trade their wares and will be keen to return to the new facility once completed.  Some have chosen to mount an 11th hour campaign to save the market and use the closure for grubby political gain. Having tried for over 6 months to find an acceptable solution RAST regrets to inform all that we have now exhausted all avenues to no avail. We encourage those aggrieved to continue to work with their local politicians to seek alternative funding for another venue. We believe Andrew Wilkie MP, Federal Member for Clark, is best placed to assist given his most recent interest in the matter.

OUR MARKET IS HISTORIC

Hobart Showground Sunday Market is more than just a place of goods for sale at great prices – it’s part of an historic landmark, a tourist attraction and an institution for our locals.  This vast, vibrant centre of entertainment and trade has been operated by the Market owners since 1903, with the origins of The Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania going back to 1821.  In any one year the Market attracts over 200,000 visitors.

GRAB A BARGAIN

Come and get some great bargains. We have a lot of great stalls: bric-a-brac, soaps, fishing items, handmade head bands, garden statues, homemade cakes, jams, biscuits, dog treats, knitted items, scenic photographs, free range eggs, fresh produce, organic veggies, incense, fresh cut flowers, face painting occasionally, handmade jewellery, Sunday papers, candles & oils, miniature doll house items, DVD’s, CD’s, pre-loved dolls and doll clothes and much, much more. Spread over one massive building, it’s the largest indoor and open air market in Hobart.  Although the indoor area is well weatherproofed it is recommended you dress for the weather whatever the time of year.  It is a rare day when you will not be tempted to browse the open air stallholders who come whatever the weather. Please note that product availability may change subject to stallholders attendance.
